General Information

The public works division focuses on infrastructure improvements, both for area (neighborhood) benefit and to provide opportunities for economic development and job growth. Continued revitalization of low- to moderate-income neighborhoods through the design and/or construction of curbs, gutters, a storm water drainage system, a new street surface, placement of street trees, and sidewalk replacement.

Redevelopment Areas

Recent and ongoing projects include:

  • Construction of New Margaret Avenue in the SR 46 TIF District.
  • Construction of the Cherry Street Mult-Modal Transportation Facility at 750 Cherry Street.
  • Fruitridge Avenue from Fort Harrison Road to Steelton Road
  • 25th Street from Maple Avenue to Florida Avenue.
  • The Central Eastside Area, South of Maple Avenue, to be completed in 2016.
  • The North Eastside Area, North of Maple and East of 25th Street to be completed in 2016.
  • The South Westside Area, south of Poplar - extensive removal and replacement of emergency curb and sidewalks, along with milling and paving of Seventh Street from Poplar to Washington Street.
  • A new river walk and boat ramp along the Wabash River at Fairbanks Park, completed in cooperation with the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department
  • Infrastructure in the South Westside Area South of Poplar has had extensive removal and replacement of sidewalks and curbs along with milling and paving of 7th Street from Poplar Street to Washington Street.
  • A new river walk and boat ramp along the Wabash River at Fairbanks Park was completed in cooperation with the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department.
  • In the Fort Harrison Business Park Economic Development Area & Tax Allocation Area, Design and construction was completed for the widening of Fruitridge Avenue from Fort Harrison Road to Steelton Road along with new street lights and traffic signal at the intersection of Fruitridge Avenue and Steelton Road. Also, within this project area, a new twelve-inch water line was extended from Steelton Road to Haythorne Avenue, including fire hydrants.
  • In the Central Business District Urban Renewal & Tax Allocation Area, the new Multi Modal Transportation Facility at 7th Street and Cherry Street was constructed, which consists of 626 parking spaces along with a city bus transfer area and interstate bus facilities. The new five story structure was completed in the Spring of 2008.
  • In the Central Business District Urban Renewal & Tax Allocation Area, extensive removal and replacement of curb and sidewalk along with the installation of new street lighting and replacement of street trees.
  • In the North Central Terre Haute Urban Renewal & Tax Allocation Area, extensive removal and replacement of curb and sidewalk along with the installation of new street lighting and replacement of street trees.
  • Infrastructure in the North Eastside Area from Florida Avenue to Maple Avenue and 25th Street to Lost Creek completed in 2008.
  • Infrastructure in the Central Eastside Area from Maple Avenue to 8th Avenue, and 25th Street to 31st Street completed in 2008.
  • Infrastructure in the North Eastside Area from Collett Avenue to Maple Avenue and 25th Street to Duane Avenue to be completed in 2015.
  • Infrastructure in the Central Eastside Area from 8th Avenue to 4th Avenue, and 25th Street to 31st Street to be completed in 2015.
  • Infrastructure in the S.R. 46 Tax Allocation Area from Industrial Margaret Avenue to New Margaret Avenue, and S.R 46 to the west side of the tax allocation area, to be completed in 2016.
